The UK visa process can be daunting. Our experts share the top mistakes applicants make and how to avoid them.
The UK Standard Visitor Visa is one of the most applied-for visas by UAE residents — and one of the most misunderstood. UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) assesses every application individually, and small mistakes can result in refusals that affect future applications. Here are our top ten tips based on thousands of applications processed from the UAE.
The UK visitor visa is always multiple entry. What you choose is the validity period: 6 months, 2 years, 5 years, or 10 years. The permitted stay per visit is always a maximum of 6 months regardless of which validity you select. If you plan to visit the UK regularly, applying for a 2-year or longer visa costs more upfront but saves time and money over multiple applications.
UKVI expects to see consistent income and a stable balance that can comfortably cover your trip. Large cash deposits made shortly before your application are flagged as suspicious. Avoid transferring funds into your account in the weeks before applying. The account should reflect your normal financial life, not a staged performance for the visa officer.
The central question a UKVI officer asks is: why will this person come back? Your evidence of ties to the UAE — your employment contract, tenancy agreement, family here, business interests — is what answers that question. A strong job with clear proof of leave approval is one of the most powerful things you can show.
The No Objection Certificate from your employer must be on company letterhead, signed and stamped by an authorised signatory, and explicitly state your position, salary, the dates of your approved leave, and confirmation that you are expected to return to work. A generic letter without these details weakens your application significantly.
UKVI does not have an official minimum validity requirement beyond the length of your intended stay, but we strongly recommend having at least 6 months of passport validity beyond your return date. An expiring passport during a visa assessment can create unnecessary complications.
Never book non-refundable flights or hotels before your visa is approved. Processing takes approximately 15 working days under standard service, but this can vary. Use refundable or flexible fare options until your visa is in hand.
If you need a faster decision, UKVI offers Priority service (typically 5 working days) and Super Priority service (next working day decision in most cases). These services cost more but can be essential if you have an upcoming event, wedding, or business meeting with a fixed date.
The UK has moved to a digital eVisa system. If your application is approved, you will receive a decision email and your visa status will be linked to your UKVI online account — not stuck into your passport as a physical sticker in most cases. Make sure you have set up your UKVI account and can access it before travelling.
All UK visa applications from the UAE must be submitted through VFS Global, with centres in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Al Ain, and Ajman. A biometric appointment — where your fingerprints and photograph are captured — is mandatory. Skipping this step or submitting an incomplete biometric will halt your application.
A previous UK visa refusal is on record and will be considered in every future application. If you have been refused before, a professionally prepared application that directly addresses the reasons for the earlier refusal is essential. Our team at TA Tourism reviews refusal letters and builds strengthened applications to maximise your approval chances.
