UAE nationals (Emirati passport holders) do not require a Temporary Resident Visa to visit Canada — they are visa-exempt. All other nationalities residing in the UAE must apply for a Canada Visitor Visa, officially called a Temporary Resident Visa or TRV.
Canada visa applications are submitted through the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) online portal. There is no paper application and no embassy walk-in. You create an IRCC account, complete Form IMM 5257, upload your documents, pay the fee online, and then attend a biometrics appointment at VFS Global in Dubai or Abu Dhabi.
Most applicants are required to provide biometrics — fingerprints and a digital photograph — at the VFS Global Canada Visa Application Centre. Critically, processing does not begin until your biometrics are enrolled. Once submitted, biometrics are valid for 10 years, so if you have applied for a Canadian visa in the last decade, you may not need to provide them again.
The standard document list for a Canada visitor visa from the UAE includes: a valid passport (minimum 6 months validity, at least 2 blank pages), your UAE residence visa and Emirates ID, recent passport photographs, bank statements for the last 6 months showing consistent and sufficient funds, an original employment letter stating your position, salary, and approved leave dates, a No Objection Certificate from your employer, proof of strong ties to the UAE such as property documents, tenancy agreement, or family connections, a confirmed hotel booking or invitation letter from a Canadian host, a return flight reservation, and a detailed travel itinerary.
This is where Canada differs significantly from other destinations. Processing begins only after biometrics are enrolled, and standard TRV processing from Dubai currently runs 30 to 60 working days. During peak summer and holiday periods, this can stretch to 90 days or more. Apply at least 8 to 12 weeks before your intended travel date — and during peak season, 16 weeks is safer.
There is no official fast-track or priority processing option for tourist visas. A clean, complete, professionally prepared file is the best tool you have to avoid delays.

Your bank statements should show 6 months of consistent income and a stable balance. A strong employment letter, property documents, and family ties in the UAE significantly strengthen your case.
